Brand systems that survive other agencies

What belongs in guidelines so your brand does not drift within a year.

A brand identity is delivered, everyone is pleased, and eleven months later nothing looks quite like it did. No single person broke it. A print supplier approximated a colour, a freelancer rebuilt a template from a screenshot, a new hire used last year’s deck. Drift is cumulative and nobody notices until it is expensive to undo.

The cause is almost always guidelines written to describe the identity rather than to defend it.

Descriptive guidelines versus operational ones

Most brand documents show the logo, list the colours, name the fonts, and stop. That tells a designer what the brand looks like. It does not tell a print supplier what to do when the logo has to go on a dark background at 8mm, which is the moment drift actually happens.

Guidelines are not a description of your brand. They are the answer to every awkward question a supplier will ask when you are not available.

What belongs in a system that holds

Minimum sizes and clear space, with the actual measurements, not a diagram alone
Logo variants for dark, light, single-colour, and very small applications
Colour values for screen, coated print, uncoated print and vinyl — not just a hex code
A type scale with real sizes for headings, body and captions, plus a licensed web fallback
Explicit incorrect usage examples, because prohibition is clearer than principle
Editable templates for every recurring output your business actually produces

The templates matter more than the rules

This is the part most often cut for budget, and it is the part that prevents drift most reliably. A rule can be misread. A locked template cannot. If your team has a correct deck, a correct letterhead and correct social sizes sitting in a shared folder, the brand holds without anyone consulting a document.

Test it before you sign it off

We hand guidelines to someone who was not involved in the project and ask them to produce three pieces of collateral from the document alone. Whatever they get wrong is a gap in the guidelines, not a mistake on their part. That test has changed every brand document we have written.

Give it to an outsider and watch where they hesitate
Every hesitation is a missing rule or a missing template
Fix those before handover, not at the first supplier complaint
Has your brand drifted?

Send us what your suppliers are producing today. We will show you where the system is failing and what it takes to hold it.
