Native or cross-platform: how we decide

A decision framework based on what the app does, not on what is fashionable.

This choice gets made on the wrong grounds more often than any other in app projects. Teams pick a framework because it is current, or because a developer already knows it, and then discover eighteen months later that the decision constrained something that mattered.

We ask four questions instead. The answers usually point clearly in one direction.

One: does the app depend on the device?

Camera processing, background location, Bluetooth peripherals, offline sync of large datasets, heavy animation. If two or more of these are core to what the app does, native is the safer choice. Cross-platform can reach most device features through plugins, but each plugin is a dependency you do not control and cannot fix quickly.

Two: how different are the two platforms’ experiences?

If iOS and Android users should get meaningfully different interfaces, the shared-code saving evaporates. If the app is largely forms, lists and content — which most business apps are — a single codebase covers both properly.

Cross-platform saves you money on the parts of an app that are the same. It saves you nothing on the parts that must differ.

Three: who will maintain it in two years?

A single React Native codebase can be maintained by one competent developer. Two native codebases realistically need two specialists, or one person context-switching badly. For a mid-sized business without an in-house mobile team, this often decides it on its own.

Four: what is the honest lifespan?

A campaign or event app with a six-month life: cross-platform, always
A product you intend to invest in for years: weigh native more heavily
An internal tool for staff devices: cross-platform, and skip the app stores where you can
A consumer app competing on feel and performance: native, and budget accordingly

What we usually recommend

For most business apps — field service, booking, ordering, internal tools — React Native or Flutter is the right answer, and we say so. For apps where the device is the product, we recommend native even when it costs more, and we put the reasoning in writing so the decision can be challenged.

What we will not do is give you a default. The recommendation comes after the four questions, not before them.
